Stanza 40 and Commentary on It in The Spiritual Canticle by St. John of the Cross
My reflection on Note 4
“Even,” “too often,” “how many times” is how I have begun many sentences in these reflections, at least in my mind, if not in actuality. Then I pontificate about how “too often we miss seeing Christ or God in others,” or something similar. When really it is I am who missing it.
To paraphrase St. John of the Cross in the note above, I am incapable of seeing God because my own passions are directed toward others: anger or lust or whatever and my appetites are awakened and aflame.
Lord, allow me to direct my passion, my joy, my love, toward You, and see You in others, in the circumstances of my life as much as You allow me to see You. Amen.

So true. I want so desperately to see God clearly, to see my brothers and sisters as God sees us, but, my ego is always there to “filter” out the truth of their being. God bless you, brother in Christ for your post.
